THE PRAYER OF SIMEON - Luke 2: 29-32

This month we begin a series designed to help us in our praying. And what better way than to focus on the prayers of those who were closest to the person of Jesus.

Simeon was one of those comparatively rare souls who have learned to'wait upon God'. Sounds out of keeping with our impatient, have-it-now world, doesn't it But 'waiting upon God' is essential if we are to get things right and not waste our energies on fruitless enterprises. Nor does it mean sitting back and doing nothing except twiddle our spiritual thumbs! 'Waiting upon God' means taking time to observe God's ways, seeking to discern his will and refusing to rush into things without being sure that that is what he wants; It also means trusting him to guide us to be at the right place at the right time. It was no coincidence that Simeon was at the right spot in the Temple precinct on the very day at the very hour when the infant Jesus was brought there. No wonder his heart overflowed in praise:

* Now he could die in peace because his confidence in God had been gloriously rewarded.

* Now he could see that the purpose behind his waiting was greater and far more wonderful than he could ever have imagined.

* Now he was able to comprehend the full sweep of God's plan: this little child was to be the Light of Salvation not only for the Jewish people but for the wide world.

Waiting upon God results in praise from a full heart.
