Genesis
Genesis records that God gave man dominion over the whole earth. A recent authoritative report states clearly that we -all of us - as individuals can, by our own actions, affect the future of the planet by deciding whether or not to obtain possessions which, by their operation produce damaging quantities of the so-called 'greenhouse gases'. Powerful cars, with or without 4-wheel drive, holidays in far-off places reached by huge aircraft, exotic foods from half way round the world, ownership of two or more houses, more and more lighting, both domestic and street, powered machinery and so on.
When the report was published, various people who own one or more of these carbon gas producers were interviewed. They were asked whether they would now give up using these possessions and one by one they refused. They pointed out that they had worked hard for many years to be able to afford these things and could see no reason whey they should give them up. They pointed to others, e.g. multi-national companies, who they suggested are the real polluters.
Which one of us, I wonder, is not a customer of multi-national companies? It seems quite likely that our dominion over the earth could end by producing desolation, famine, war - an end of our civilisation.
There is no way of evading this problem or our responsibility for it. It seems quite likely that what would be left could be isolated places farmed by small groups of people using primitive tools to produce enough to sustain a simple but adequate local life.
You do not have to read very far into St.Matthew's Gospel to find that it is the meek who shall inherit the earth, the mild and gentle people who respect God's creation.
