Literary - A New Season...
We have had four lectures since the beginning of the season, of those we have only reported on one. The meeting on October 19 th was a lecture by Adrian Procktor who has been lecturing on various aspects of history of London for over 40 years. He was born in London and educated within Tower Bridge. During that time he has built up a large collection of slides, photographs and prints, all of which are now converted into digital images. Using a computer and state-of-the-art digital projector, he has an unrivalled collection of visual material with which to illustrate his lectures. The lecture that evening showed how coffee houses were the source of daily news in the 17 th century. Well-known coffee houses were described and this led to considering the other forms of communication, like telegraphs and the telephone, which eventually led to the world of today's internet.
On November 2 nd the society has the pleasure of a return visit by Ken Kilburn to talk on a Living Roman Road. He talked about a small section of Stane Street built by the Romans in the 1 st Century AD to provide communications between London and Chichester, much of which is still in use today.
Our speaker on November 16 th was Rosemary Horton who explained why she went to work in New Zealand unexpectedly in 2001 and what happened there. Subsequently she revisited the islands but the Society will have to wait until another occasion for that lecture.
On November 30 th we shall have a return visit by Kev. Reynolds who will give a talk on the “Most Beautiful Walk in the World” followed on December 14 th by a visit from John Derris on “Behind the Doors of the Magic Circle”.
We return after Christmas with a lecture on January 4 th by Laurie Manser on “Memories of a Garden Boy” and again on January 18 th with a talk on “A Queen's Messenger and the Cold War” by Lt. Col. J. Kimmins.
