Literary - A Queen's Messenger and the Cold War...

On January 18 th our speaker, Lt .Col. J Kimmins, persevered through serious traffic delays due to a serious accident in Reigate to come later than programmed to speak of his experiences as “A Queen's Messenger and the Cold War”. His appointment covered important missions to Russia, China and many other countries carrying important documents on behalf of the Royal Family and Government Departments. He quoted many amusing instances of his travels and we were truly grateful that he kindly honoured his commitment to be present that evening. Thankfully he had a better journey home on the advice of one of our members, but sad to say that he is declining speaking evening engagements his visit to us being the last.

On 1 st February Peter Jones gave an illustrated talk on “The Neptune Coastline Campaign” originally known as “Enterprise Neptune” which details how the National Trust's involvement with the coastline of England, Wales and Northern Ireland has evolved. His talk accompanied with slides raises some of the issues concerning the threats which are currently exposed and gave us some information on how the Trust had responded. Peter Jones has been a volunteer with the Trust fro over eleven years. He is a steward at Chartwell, and drives a buggy for less able visitors to Emmett's Garden. A very interesting talk enjoyed by a large audience.
