Literary - Northern Spain

We were very pleased to welcome a return visit by Manuela Sowter to talk on some lesser know parts of Northern Spain, which is full of history and wonderful scenery. Her illustrated talk on the region of Asturias where nature meets history. The part of Spain the Arab conquest of Spain never reached and where the Kingdom of Spain was born. It is a land that still today continues with ancient Celtic traditions. Since 1388 has been a Principality and the heir to the Spanish throne is known as the Crown Prince of Asturias.

It is a land of breathtakingly beautiful scenery with mountains and valleys, rushing rivers and streams, protected forests and wild life, that gives shelter to Spain's lost wild bears. The home of cider making, an older tradition than wine making, elevated granaries, impressive historical buildings and 8 th century churches. The coastline is dotted with hidden colourful fishing ports and winding roads leading down to them.

An excellent talk looking at the various aspects of this incredibly beautiful untouched and unspoilt principality, its traditions, dancing, history and characteristics.

At our last but one meeting of the season, we welcomed Sandra Winter who is the National Secretary of the Handbell Ringers of Great Britain. Sandra is a published composer and arranger of handbell music and is very involved in directing and leading teams and workshops both in this country and overseas.

Sandra Winter demonstrated the art and outlined the history of tune ringing and handbells, covering design, care and handling

The audience appreciated this evening's entertainment.

Our Annual General Meeting brought the Society to the close of another interesting programme of events.
